Course Descriptions:

01D:021 Problems in Design I: Form and Structure
This course aims to expose students to 3-dimensional design studio concepts and its relation to aesthetic, structure and material.
It intends to provide the necessary knowledge and practical technical skills to allow students to further explore the 3-dimensional creative process.
Students design structures as a response to a specific problem and projects are compared and discussed in class.
This course also gives the necessary foundation to students applying for graduate school in design, architecture or related areas.
Course activities include lectures, demonstrations, assignments, practical exercises, critiques, presentations, a midterm and final portfolio.

01D:022 Problems in Design II: Form and Function
This course explores how functional objects are designed and structured.
It aims to provide the necessary knowledge and practical technical skills to allow students to further explore
the design studio problem solving process, focusing in the relationship between objects and its users.
Students are asked to design and make three functional objects with specific requirements using Computer
Numerical Controlled (CNC) technology, plastic and recycled materials.
The course also intends to establish the basis for the creation of a professional design portfolio and the communication skills to present it.
Projects will be presented in two and three-dimensional formats.
Basic model construction and basic computer skills are required for project development.
Course activities include lectures, demonstrations, assignments, practical exercises, critiques, presentations, a midterm and final portfolio.

01D:023 Basic Drafting
This course will teach how to prepare drawings for interior design projects. Students will gain the necessary skills and techniques to translate 3D design concepts to paper.
Drafting tools will be introduced and used for assignment development.
Standard conventions of notation and line weights and drafting in different scales will be exercised along with basic lettering.
Emphasis will be given to orthographic projections like floor plans, ceiling plans and elevations.
Course activities include lectures, demonstrations, assignments, practical exercises and a midterm and a final portfolio.

01D:025 Introduction to Portfolio Design
This course is designated to guide the student in developing a relationship to their design work through the process of portfolio production for print and web.
Projects use Adobe Design Premium software. Exercises will introduce Illustrator for creating and manipulating vector images, Photoshop and InDesign
for image manipulation and layout, Dreamweaver and Flash for web design.
Principles of layout and application of color and type for presentations will be exercise.
This course helps students applying for job and/or graduate school in design, architecture or related areas that need to prepare digital and printed portfolios.
Course activities include lectures, demonstrations, assignments, practical exercises and a midterm and a final portfolio.

01D:064 Introduction to Computer Aided Design for 3D Design (AutoCAD)
This course introduces the basic principles of 2D/3D computer aided drafting and teaches how to draw accurately plans, elevations and
Sections for objects and interior spaces using AutoCAD software. Drawing in three dimensions will be introduced.
Basic and advanced commands will be taught and used to create professional technical drawings.
Examples of Ludwig Mes van der Rohe
Architecture and design will be used for tutorials and assignment development.
This course gives
Course activities include lectures, demonstrations, assignments, practical exercises and a midterm and a final portfolio.
This course gives the necessary AutoCAD software foundation to students applying for graduate school or jobs in design, architecture or related areas.

01D:070 Introduction to Computer Modeling for 3D Design (3ds Max)
This course aims to provide basic knowledge and basic practical technical skills with 3DS Max Studio software.
Students create and manipulate basic forms and work with texture, background, light and camera viewpoints.
Knowledge of computer modeling is essential for anyone working with design, architecture or related area and Virtual Reality (VR) environments.
Course activities include lectures, demonstrations, assignments, practical exercises and a midterm and a final portfolio.

01D:075 Introduction to Virtual Reality for 3D Design (Vizard)
This course is an introduction to Vizard software. Students learn how to design virtual 3D space experiences translating environments created
using 3D Studio Max sotfware into Vizard software. Course activities include demonstrations and assignments.
Students work independently in different projects and learn to use different peripherals to visualize forms in a virtual environment.
Assignments are organized according to complexity and structured to give students knowledge, ability and confidence.
Basic knowledge of 3D Studio Max or similar computer modeling application is required.
Course activities include lectures, demonstrations, assignments, practical exercises, critiques, presentations, a midterm and final portfolio.

01D:137 Environmental Design I
The course focuses on the relationship between humans, design, production processes and waste. Students will be encouraged
to think about ways to use and recycle several types of waste.
Design solutions will be developed into installations aiming to provide students with the unique opportunity to experience in real scale changes performed in the environment.
The course also aims to establish the basis for the creation of a professional design portfolio.
All assignments will be photographed for final visual presentation and final portfolio.
Course activities include in site installations, seminars, assignments, practical exercises, research, critiques, presentations, visits and a midterm and final portfolios.

01D:141 Interior Design I
The course focuses on the relationship between the interior space and its users.
The main objective is to provide basic knowledge and experience with interior design problems.
Students are exposed to theory and practical issues and are asked to propose creative designs for retail and commercial spaces.
The goal is to develop in each student basic visual vocabulary and the ability to solve problems creatively.
Also, the course aims to establish the basis for the creation of a professional design portfolio and the communication skills to present it.
Historical and contemporary designers will be studied as part of the goal to establish a visual foundation.
The projects will be presented in 2 and 3 dimensional formats.
Course activities include lectures, demonstrations, assignments, practical exercises, critiques, presentations, a midterm and final portfolio.

01D:142 Color for Interior Design
This course aims to familiarize students with the use of colors for interior spaces.
Principles of color theory are reviewed and applied to 3D environments.
Exercises will focus on the use of color as a compositional element and psychological tool.
Course activities include lectures, demonstrations, assignments, practical exercises, critiques, presentations, a midterm and final portfolio.

01D:144 Interior Design II
This course is a continuation of Interior Design I.
In this course students will explore in detail the various stages of interior design.
They will develop a concept, draw spaces in detail and make scaled models using traditional techniques and/or Rapid Prototyping (RP).
Detailed orthographic drawings will be introduced.
The course aims to establish the basis for the creation of a professional 3D design portfolio and the communication skills to present it.
Basic model construction and basic computer skills are required for project development.
Course activities include lectures, demonstrations, assignments, practical exercises, critiques, presentations, a midterm and final portfolio.
